Why I Wrote Shadow Intelligence: The Historical Shinobi

The shinobi are among the most recognized—and most misunderstood—figures in martial history. Popular culture often presents the ninja through dramatic stories and extraordinary abilities, making it difficult to separate history from legend.

I wrote Shadow Intelligence: The Historical Shinobi to look beyond that familiar image. The book examines historical writings, intelligence gathering, infiltration, deception, concealment, survival, martial tradition, and the evidence behind ninjutsu. It also considers influential sources and traditions, including the Bansenshūkai, Shōninki, CIA “Ninja” Report, Togakure-ryū, and the Bujinkan tradition.

My purpose was not to dismiss tradition or accept every story as an established fact. It was to help readers recognize the difference between documentation, tradition, interpretation, and legend.

For martial artists, researchers, and readers interested in the historical shinobi, this book offers a careful look behind the familiar ninja story.
